Village Hall reopens to public with strict safety measures in place

June 29, 2020 – Village Hall reopened to the public Monday with the focus on keeping visitors and municipal employees safe from the COVID-19 coronavirus by limiting building hours, access and occupancy.

The south door at 123 Madison Street, and the elevator access for persons with disabilities on Lombard Avenue, opens at 9 a.m. for senior citizens and individuals at higher risk for contracting the virus and 10 a.m. for all others.

In-person services are available initially only on Mondays through Thursdays, and the building closes at 5 p.m. each day.

Proper social distancing practices are being enforced and everyone entering the building is required to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth. Disposable masks are being provided for use inside Village Hall for anyone over the age of 2 who does not have one.

Officials continue to remind residents to call 708.358.5700 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays to seek assistance and to visit www.oak-park.us/onlineservices for a wide range of services available without a trip to Village Hall.

But for those who still have a need for in-person services, coming to Village Hall is not the same experience as before the pandemic. Patience, officials say, is the watchword for at least the near future.

The lobby of Village Hall has been reconfigured to better manage interactions between customers and staff while complying with necessary social distancing requirements

Desks and counters with clear glass sneeze guards have been arranged to protect the health and safety of both customers and municipal staff as the risk of spreading COVID 19 in the community remains.

The lobby can accommodate a maximum of eight persons at a time, with additional visitors assisted in order of their arrival as service counter space opens.

A staff member in the lobby will ensure the proper municipal worker is available to provide the various services offered at Village Hall. An online appointment scheduler has been created to help reduce wait times and potential lines outside Village Hall.

While the Village Hall lobby will be closed to the public on Fridays, support still will be available by telephone at 708.358.5700 and online at www.oak-park.us/onlineservices.

Anyone wishing to meet with a specific staff person is urged to call ahead since staff is working in isolated groups to limit exposure and may not be available at a particular time.

Providing in-person services in a safe environment has added some complexity to operations, according to Village Manager Cara Pavlicek, who called safety for both visitors and municipal employees a top priority.

“Even though the numbers of COVID-19 cases appear to have stabilized in Oak Park, the risk of community spread is a reality that we must pay attention to every day,” she said. “We are committed to delivering services in the most effective and safest ways possible, and this requires balancing the needs of residents who are not able to access services online with the necessary workplace safety requirements.”

Village Hall had been closed to the public since March 18 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, police officers and firefighter/paramedics remained on duty, as did key Public Works Department workers and essential administrative services staff. Other employees continued to work on a case-by-case basis and many employees worked remotely.

Future changes to in-person services at Village Hall will be posted online at www.oak-park.us/villagehall.
