UPDATE - March 15, 2024:
After first detecting measles this month for the first time since 2019, Chicago public health officials reported 12 cases as of Friday, more than double the amount confirmed Tuesday. There has not been a confirmed case in Oak Park to date.
With cases on the rise within close proximity to our Village, Oak Park public health officials remind the community that measles is a very contagious disease that can have serious health implications, especially for children younger than 5 years old. Those most at risk for contracting measles are those that are unvaccinated. The MMR vaccine provides the best and strongest protection against this disease, and most people receive the vaccine as a child. Unvaccinated people have a 90% chance of contracting measles if exposed to it, compared to a 3% chance for those who are vaccinated.

If you do not know your measles immunization status, please talk to your health care provider as a simple blood test can confirm immunity.
In addition to vaccine, measures to protect yourself include frequent, proper handwashing with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, and wearing a well-fitted KN95 or N95 mask when in a high-risk environment, such as a congregate living facility, a shelter or a health care facility.

People with a confirmed exposure to measles who are not vaccinated will be required to quarantine for 21 days. This mandatory quarantine will be strictly enforced by the Public Health Department.

March 12, 2024 - With five confirmed measles cases in nearby Chicago in recent weeks, Oak Park health officials are closely monitoring the spread of this contagious respiratory disease, and keeping in communication with city, county and state and public health representatives. To date, there are no confirmed cases in Oak Park.
Public health officials advise the best way to protect loved ones, neighbors and vulnerable populations is to be up-to-date on vaccinations. Most Americans receive the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine as a child and are not at risk. The concern is for those that are unvaccinated, as 90% of unvaccinated individuals will likely contract measles if exposed to it.
Measles is a highly contagious serious respiratory disease that is particularly dangerous for babies, young children, pregnant women, and people with compromised immune systems. Complications from measles can lead to pneumonia, seizures, hearing loss, life-long brain damage, or even death.
Both the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) are reporting an uptick of measles cases around the state and the U.S. From 2020 through 2022, Illinois had zero confirmed cases, followed by four cases in 2023. Nationally, there have been 45 confirmed measles cases in the first three months of 2024, as compared to 58 cases in all of 2023.
These increases could be attributed to falling vaccination rates. Illinois and the nation as a whole are experiencing a decline in measles vaccine coverage in school-age children, and in Illinois vaccine coverage has dipped below the 95% herd immunity level needed for protection against measles.
