Juneteenth celebration

The entire community is invited to join in Oak Park’s celebration of Juneteenth! This year's theme is Remembering OUR History and Claiming OUR Future.

Juneteenth community cookout
11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, June 15
Village Hall south lawn

  • The entire community is invited to a Juneteenth community cookout from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the south lawn of Village Hall, 123 Madison St. The free event will include a vendor market, music and of course, food.
  • Live entertainment lineup:
    • 11 a.m. - Jesse White Tumblers
    • Noon - Bucket Boys
    • 12:45 p.m. - Kuumba Kids
    • 1:30 p.m. - Midnight Sun 

Juneteenth flag-raising ceremony

6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 12

  • Oak Park's Juneteenth festivities begin with a flag-raising ceremony from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12 in the courtyard at Village Hall, 123 Madison St. The free event will include speakers, refreshments and more.

Resource Booths: All local service or resource providers are invited to register to host a table during the event by clicking here to fill out a form. *Update June 7, registration is now closed for resource booths.

Black Business Fair: Black-owned businesses are invited to showcase products and services during the cookout. Business owners are invited to click here to register for a table at the event.

Juneteenth events in the community:

Black History Bike Tour

Celebrate Juneteenth by visiting sites significant to African American history in Oak Park on a Black History Bike Tour, developed by Oak Park River Forest Museum. Executive Director Frank Lipo will be at the Village of Oak Park’s Juneteenth community cookout that starts at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at Village Hall and will gather those interested for the bike tour at 1:30 p.m. The entire tour, available at, includes 16 stops. The length of Saturday’s tour will depend on the group's interest, with participants able to drop off as needed.

In addition to the June 15 bike tour offered at the Village of Oak Park official Juneteenth celebration, a special Black History Bike Tour will be led by Frank Lipo on the Juneteenth holiday itself, Wednesday June 19.  The free bike tour will leave from Oak Park River Forest Museum at 1:30 p.m. and will take about 1.5 hours. Wearing a bike helmet is required for the June 15 and June 19 bike tours. 

Juneteenth oratory competition

  • Students of all ages are invited to share their original, persuasive speeches on the importance of Juneteenth in a community-wide oratory competition.
  • Winners and runners-up will receive cash prizes and also be presented as featured speakers at a celebratory event on Sun., June 9 at The Nineteenth Century Charitable Association, and at the Village’s Juneteenth flag raising ceremony on Wed., June 12.
  • Competition dates are Thurs., May 16 from 7-8 p.m. (high school), Sat., May 18 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. (middle school), Sun., May 19 from 3-4 p.m. (elementary school) and Wed., May 29 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. (elementary school).
  • The contest is open to all youth, including Oak Parkers and non-residents.
