Second round of mosquito spraying in Oak Park is set

Updated Sept. 4, 2020 - Spraying to control adult mosquitoes was canceled last night due to high and variable wind speeds.

Desplaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District officials say they currently have no plans to reschedule spraying next week as temperatures are predicted to drop sharply, which would not be conducive to successful spraying operations.

The threat of West Nile Virus remains heightened into Labor Day weekend, officials warn, but should decline as temperatures drop.

Questions regarding spraying, including options for those medically sensitive to the insecticide, should be directed to 708.447.1765.

Sept. 1,  2020 - As part of its efforts to eliminate mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus, the Desplaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District has scheduled the season’s second round of spraying in Oak Park.

Abatement district trucks are scheduled to be spraying on Oak Park streets from about 9 p.m. to midnight, Thurs., Sept. 3, weather permitting. For more information on truck spraying, click here.

A calm, rainless evening with temperatures no more than 85 degrees is preferred for spraying, according to abatement district officials. Should unfavorable weather conditions prevail, spraying will be delayed to a subsequent night.

West Nile virus continues to be found in samples of mosquitoes collected from traps throughout Illinois, including in Oak Park.  Additional spraying could occur each week while the threat continues, official say.

Questions regarding spraying, including options for those medically sensitive to the insecticide, should be directed to 708.447.1765.

Public health officials say the best defense against the virus-carrying mosquitoes is to take precautions to prevent being bitten. The threat of West Nile Virus can continue until mid-October, they say.

Take precautions... Avoid being bitten by mosquitoes by wearing long sleeves and pants, limiting time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active and using insect repellant that contains DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol. Residents also are urged to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites by cleaning roof gutters, storing containers upside down and emptying birdbaths every few days.
