Man charged after allegedly punching Oak Park Police officer

Jan. 11, 2021 – A 36-year-old Oak Park man was arrested after allegedly punching an Oak Park Police officer in the face multiple times at about 10:30 a.m. near North Avenue and Hayes Avenue.

Ramus L. Steward, who lives in the 1200 block of N. Hayes Ave., was charged with aggravated battery and resisting/obstructing a police officer. Details on bond or a court date are not yet available.

The officer told investigators he was conducting a routine premise check in the area when Steward approached the vehicle and began banging on the driver’s side window.

Investigators say Steward apparently managed to partially open the driver’s side squad car door, struck the officer in the face and walked away. Then when the officer followed and attempted to calm Steward, he allegedly struck the officer a second time.

The officer was able to subdue Steward until backup arrived. The officer was transported to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood where he was treated for a facial laceration and fractured thumb, and then released.

Police have not yet determined the reason behind the unprovoked attack. The investigation continues. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Oak Park Police Department at 708.386.3800.
