Cleanup continues after severe storm

June 1, 2016 - Public Works crews will likely spend the next few days cleaning up damage created by the severe storm that struck Oak Park on Tuesday afternoon.

By 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Public Works crews had re-opened all roads blocked by debris and removed all reported tree limbs leaning on houses. Today 10 crews are picking up trees and limbs from the parkway and clearing stormwater sewer inlets throughout town.

Residents can call the Public Works Department at 708.358.5700 to report any additional storm damage such as tree limbs that may be hanging dangerously.

Officials are still assessing damage, but so far 10 trees - some of them quite large - have been removed. It is estimated anywhere from 20-40 trees may be lost as a result of the storm.

More than 1.3 inches of rain fell in Oak Park during a two-hour stretch after the storm hit at approximately 3:10 p.m. Maximum wind speeds during the storm varied across the Village, but gusts reportedly reached 64 miles per hour at the central reporting station near Lake Street and Lombard Avenue.

Residents are reminded that when severe weather creates debris from trees on private property, owners should not bring limbs or brush to the curb, but instead make other arrangements for disposal. Public Works crews only pick up debris from parkway trees, a big job with nearly 19,000 trees on public property throughout the Village.

Brush from private property will be treated as yard waste if it is tied into bundles, each tagged with a green yard waste sticker and placed in the regular refuse pick-up area. Each bundle should be no larger than two feet in diameter, four feet in length and not exceed 50 pounds. Yard waste stickers are $2.45 each and available at most Village grocery and hardware stores, as well as in the cashier's office at Village Hall.

The Village's contract refuse hauler also will come to a home and estimate the cost for removing larger, unbundled quantities of yard waste. Call 888.656.5350 to request an estimate.
