Charges filed in Blue Line panhandling turned attack

June 25, 2018 – A 28-year-old Chicago woman has been charged in connection with a panhandling incident that escalated into a stabbing in the early morning hours of June 17 by the East Avenue Blue Line exit.

Diamond A. Gatewood of the 2000 block of North Kilpatrick Avenue in Chicago has been charged with one count of attempted armed robbery and one count of aggravated battery. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office filed charges Fri., June 22.

According to Police, at about 1:45 a.m., Sun., June 17, Gatewood asked a 39-year-old Chicago man for money near the Blue Line exit at East Avenue. When he refused, the victim said the woman produced a cutting instrument of some kind and begun to stab him.

The victim sustained more than a dozen non-life-threatening wounds. He was transported to Loyola Medical where he was treated and released.

“An incident like this quickly interests news reporters and can generate a lot of attention on social media, and then fade away just as fast,” said Oak Park Acting Police Chief LaDon Reynolds. “But the investigation doesn’t stop just because public interest has diminished. We always continue to work a case until an arrest is made.”

Gatewood is being held pending a bond hearing on June 26. A preliminary hearing is set for June 29.

Any criminal charges are merely allegations and all persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
