Victim, bystander foil carjacking attempt

Jan. 14, 2022 – An Oak Park man has been charged in an attempted carjacking that occurred at about 2:30 p.m., Mon., Jan 12 in the 600 block of South Home Avenue.

Paul Pogulis, 24, of the 100 block of South Kenilworth Avenue, was charged yesterday with one count of attempted aggravated vehicle hijacking.

The victim, a 62-year-old Chicago resident, told Police she observed the offender attempting to open the door to her 2021 Tesla.

As she approached, the proximity sensor automatically unlocked the car door, and the offender entered the car as she shouted for help.

A bystander who observed the incident ran to the victim’s aid as she grabbed the offender who said he had a gun and a bomb.

The bystander helped the victim detain the offender, later identified as Pogulis, until Police arrived and made the arrest without incident.

No firearm or bomb were found.

The Office of the Cook County State’s attorney determined the charge. Information on bond or a court date were not immediately available.
