Energy-saving light fixtures in parking garages

Dec. 30, 2014 - Lighting fixtures in the Village of Oak Park’s two public parking garages now use about 75 percent less energy, thanks to newly installed energy-saving LED bulbs.

The Holley Court garage and the Avenue garage, both located in downtown Oak Park, received the efficiency upgrades in October, and the Village has already started seeing energy savings.

Previously, the two garages used about 1.4 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year. The new LED fixtures require only about 338,000 kilowatt hours annually, representing a savings of nearly 75 percent. The total savings on energy and maintenance is estimated at $81,991 per year, according to Village staff.

“These two parking garages are located in high-demand areas and play an important role for Oak Park’s shoppers, business owners and residents,” said Jill Velan, the Village’s Parking and Mobility Services Manager. “We are pleased to be able to offer energy-efficient upgrades to our customers.”

Both garages are illuminated 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to the LED fixtures, the garages feature programmable dimmers that help moderate energy usage throughout the day.

The upgrade was made possible by a $40,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. In the past, the organization has supported various other local initiatives through the PlanIt Green sustainability plan.
