The Village of Oak Park has issued an official statement on behalf of Village President Vicki Scaman, Village Manager Kevin J. Jackson and Police Chief Shatonya Johnson in response to the officer-involved shooting that occurred on May 31st in Oak Park:
“Oak Park is a community defined by its values, which include a deep respect for human life, an unwavering commitment to justice, care and appreciation for our residents and those who serve them. Those values guide us today as we respond to the tragic events of Sunday evening that have left so many in our community heartbroken. A life was lost, and many are hurting. At a time like this, our most important response is one of empathy and care for all involved, including the family of Christian Wallace, our Oak Park officer, the Police Department, staff and the community at large.
“In keeping with our commitment to transparency and accountability, the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is conducting an independent investigation into this incident. We have full confidence in this process and will share information as quickly as we are able.
“Oak Park has always been a community built on trust. We are committed to the safety and well-being of every person who lives, works and visits our Village, and we ill not waver in that responsibility, especially when it is tested most."
