The Village is introducing Oak Park University (OPU), a new Government 101 program designed to help residents better understand how their local government works. This free, nine-week course, scheduled to begin on January 26, 2026, invites participants to go behind the scenes of Village operations through interactive sessions, guided tours and conversations with staff and elected officials. From public safety and sustainability to budgeting and community development, each week offers a fresh look at how Village services work together to support the community.

OPU's programmatic goals are to:

  • Encourage civic participation, including boards, commissions, public service and public engagement
  • Foster relationship-building, community connections and partnerships among Village of Oak Park officials and residents
  • Welcome and orient new residents to the village

After nine weeks, graduates will leave better equipped for local community engagement, service and leadership whether by joining a board or commission, community taskforce or committee, participating in community service projects, working with their neighborhood, offering informed input and insights on Village initiatives, or simply staying informed on all things Oak Park. Graduates will also be invited to participate in more in-depth courses on various topics concerning local government operations or initiatives in Oak Park.

Classes for the 2026 session will be held on Monday nights from 6:30 to approximately 8:30 p.m. Please note there is no class on Feb. 16 (President's Day) and March 30 (Spring Break)

Oak Park University is limited to Oak Park residents, and those who work or own a business in Oak Park. Limited space is also available for students enrolled in high school who are 16 years or older.
