Fair Housing
The rights of individuals within the protected classes of race, sex, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, veteran status, sexual orientation, age, marital status, familial status, disability, source of income, gender identity, gender expression, military discharge status, housing status or order of protection status in the purchasing, leasing, securing a loan, renting or occupying housing or other real estate are protected under Chapter 13 of the Village Code.
HOPE Fair Housing Center Report
HOPE Fair Housing Center is a fair housing nonprofit organization serving 40+ counties across Illinois. Since 1968, they’ve been committed to creating greater housing opportunities for all. The Village contracted with HOPE, which in 2023-2024 investigated large rental providers in Oak Park for compliance with anti-discrimination protections on the basis of Source of Income (SOI) and arrest or conviction records. Mandatory Management Seminar
The Village also provides a mandatory annual landlord management seminar to all owners, agents or property managers of rental housing in Oak Park. Available in-person, the seminar curriculum covers a broad array of topics, including protections and responsibilities under local, state and federal law. Village staff, experts and representatives of local housing program partners are on-hand at the seminars to introduce themselves, answer questions and describe all of the resources available to landlords in Oak Park.
