Statement on Footage from Officer-Involved Shooting
Published on June 10, 2026
The Village of Oak Park and the Oak Park Police Department have received multiple Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and media inquiries regarding available footage from an incident that occurred on May 31, 2026, involving an Oak Park Police Department officer and Christian Wallace, a resident of Chicago.
The Illinois State Police (ISP) Public Integrity Task Force (PITF) is the agency overseeing the independent incident investigation. ISP has indicated concerns about the integrity of its investigation if any associated footage were to be released at this time. The Village of Oak Park intends to release the footage as soon as it is allowed pending the completion of elements of the investigation.
Statement from Village President Vicki Scaman:
“My heart goes out to the family and friends of Christian Wallace. In the interest of full transparency, I had hoped to be commenting on the release of related video footage immediately following the family‘s private viewing. However, I do recognize the importance of respecting the independent investigation being led by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force. Therefore, I do support waiting for the earliest opportunity in the process that release of footage would not interfere with the work of investigators. I remain committed to a speedy and transparent process for the sake of Christian Wallace, his family, the officer and for Oak Park.
“As a Board and staff, we are together in our commitment to transparency and are prepared to be as responsive as possible during this challenging time. If you are struggling with processing this incident and would like mental health support, please reach out to available resources. Oak Park stands firmly committed to the safety and well-being of all who call this Village home or pass through our community at any time.”
