April Epidemiology Update
Published on April 01, 2025
As the weather warms and travel season picks up, the Oak Park Public Health Department is reminding community members to stay vigilant and up to date on vaccinations.
Infectious diseases like measles, COVID-19, and influenza are all seeing increased activity across the country, and proactive steps can make a big difference in protecting yourself and your loved ones.
Measles: A travel advisory has been issued for Texas and New Mexico due to confirmed cases of measles—one of the most contagious viruses known. While the advisory currently applies to those two states, outbreaks have been reported in at least 19 others. The MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine is highly effective in preventing infection. If you’re planning travel or unsure of your vaccination status, now is the time to check in with your healthcare provider.
COVID-19: With more gatherings, vacations, and crowded events on the horizon, a seasonal spike in COVID-19 is anticipated. Seniors and individuals with weakened immune systems remain most vulnerable and are strongly encouraged to get the updated COVID-19 booster for continued protection against severe illness and hospitalization.
Flu: While it may feel like flu season should be winding down, cases are still being reported throughout the region. If you haven’t received a flu shot yet, it’s not too late! The vaccine continues to be an important tool in minimizing serious symptoms and reducing transmission.
Take action now: Vaccines are one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce the spread and impact of infectious diseases. Whether you're traveling, caring for vulnerable family members or just trying to stay healthy this spring, review your immunization records and schedule any needed vaccines. Together, we can help keep Oak Park safe and thriving this season.
