Community Design

On March 4, 2025, the Village Board approved the elimination of the Community Design Commission and merged its responsibilities with the Zoning Board of Appeals and Neighborhood Services Department.  References to this commission will be removed from the Zoning Ordinance, Sign Code and Village Code.

Mission: The Community Design Commission developed a continuous program to enhance the aesthetic quality of life in the Village of Oak Park. Its tasks and projects included providing design advice, developing resource material to aid in private property development, in addition to hearing requests for sign regulation variations. The commission also made recommendations about selection, planting, maintenance, and removal of trees and shrubs within the Village of Oak Park, and also provided public educational and informational programs on matters pertaining to urban forestry.

Membership: 11 members

Qualifications: At least six of the members were trained as design professionals and at least two members were trained in urban forestry or horticulture. The remaining members were from other backgrounds and professions, provided they share an interest in the work of the commission.
