Village seeks feedback for Ridgeland Avenue resurfacing project

The Village of Oak Park is planning a roadway resurfacing project on Ridgeland Avenue from Augusta Street to North Avenue. Construction of the proposed improvements, scheduled for 2027, will use federal funding through the Surface Transportation (STP) program.

The proposed improvements include asphalt pavement resurfacing along Ridgeland Avenue from Augusta Street to North Avenue.

In addition, various combinations of traffic calming improvements are proposed. These include pedestrian refuge islands, curb bump-outs and proposed traffic diverters with turn restrictions where the Neighborhood Greenway network crosses Ridgeland Avenue at the Thomas Street and LeMoyne Parkway intersections.

Some street parking will need to be removed to enable the pedestrian refuge islands. The existing traffic signals at Division Street and Lenox Street will also be upgraded.

The proposed traffic calming improvements include:

• Pedestrian Refuge Islands, which are 8-foot wide concrete islands proposed in the center of Ridgeland Avenue at Thomas Street, Berkshire Street, Greenfield Street and Le Moyne Parkway. The islands provide a protected refuge area for pedestrians crossing Ridgeland Avenue.
• Curb Bump-outs, which are extensions of the curb that narrow the roadway width to help slow down vehicular traffic and shorten crosswalk distances. Curb bump-outs are proposed at Berkshire Street, Lenox Street and Greenfield Street.
• Right-turn-only Diverters, which are triangular concrete islands that limit vehicle movements to right turns onto and off of Ridgeland Avenue. These are proposed at the intersections of Thomas Street and Ridgeland Avenue and Le Moyne Parkway and Ridgeland Avenue. Thomas Street and Le Moyne Parkway are Neighborhood Greenway streets that prioritize bicycle travel and improve safety for non-vehicular road users. The diverters will first be installed as temporary diverters during summer 2026, and their impacts will be evaluated through the end of the year. Residents are encouraged to provide any feedback specific to the diverters through the Traffic Calming Treatments project on the Engage Oak Park website. The final design and locations of any proposed diverters will be informed by this trial and evaluation phase, including the public feedback received.
