Imagine arriving for a doctor’s appointment or to pick up groceries, only to find the one parking space that allows you to safely exit your vehicle already taken by someone who “just needed a minute.”

For many residents with disabilities, this is not a rare inconvenience. It is a daily struggle that can make ordinary tasks difficult or even impossible.

Village officials remind everyone that parking in spaces reserved for people with disabilities without a valid placard or license plate is not only illegal but also inconsiderate.

These spaces are intentionally designed to provide access, safety and independence for those who need them most. They are located near entrances and include extra room for ramps, wheelchairs and assistive equipment.

When someone without a disability parks in one of these spaces, even briefly, it can create real hardship. It may force someone with limited mobility to park far away, travel unsafe distances, or miss important appointments altogether.

What seems like a quick stop for one person can become a serious obstacle for another.

Drivers are reminded that a valid placard or license plate must always be properly displayed when using an accessible parking space. Failure to do so may result in a citation as Parking Enforcement officers are monitoring this heavily.

Respecting accessible parking is a simple act of empathy that helps keep Oak Park a welcoming, compassionate and inclusive community for all.
