On March 10, the Oak Park Public Health Department will recognize National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

In the U.S., about 23% of people living with HIV are women. However, women are less likely to be screened for HIV, in part because there is a perception that they are not at risk for transmission.

Health officials advise that women of any sexual orientation, age or race can get HIV.

For all sexually active people, knowing your HIV status puts the power of your health in your hands. Ask your health care provider for an HIV test.

Also, the Brown Elephant at 217 Harrison St. in Oak Park offers HIV testing the fourth Thursday of every month from 2 to 6 p.m.

The Public Health Department can help you locate a way to be tested and provide free condoms if you don’t know where to start. You can speak confidentially with a public health nurse by contacting the Health Department at 708.358.5480 or health@oak-park.us. Oak Park public health officials will never share your personal information.
