Starting June 1, the use of gas-powered leaf blowers in Oak Park will be permanently prohibited.

The Village is planning strict year-round enforcement of the local ordinance, and both property owners and landscape companies will be held accountable if the ordinance is violated.

If residents witness someone using a gas-powered leaf blower after June 1, they can email propertyissues@oak-park.us and provide the address where it was being used. The Neighborhood Services Department’s Code Compliance Division will then follow up with the property owner to ensure future compliance.

In 2023, the Village Board adopted Ordinance 8-41-4 to phase out gas-powered leaf blowers with the goal of reducing their environmental impacts and harmful emissions.

Village officials are engaging with landscape companies licensed to operate in Oak Park to ensure they are prepared for the permanent ban to take effect. Residents can help with that engagement by talking with their landscapers about how gas-powered leaf blowers will soon be prohibited. Printable flyers are available in English and Spanish at www.oak-park.us/leafblowers

The Village, in partnership with locally owned Ace Hardware stores, is offering exclusive financial incentives to help residents and registered landscape companies switch to cleaner, quieter, battery-powered leaf blowers.

A Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Trade-in Event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 31 at Olson's Ace Hardware (1137 Chicago Ave.) and PJ's Ace Hardware, 7 Chicago Ave. Find complete details about the trade-in offer at www.oak-park.us/LeafBlowerTradeIn.

Anyone who is unable to attend the event can still receive a $20 Ace gift card with the purchase of an electric leaf blower at the two locally owned Ace Hardware locations in Oak Park anytime in May.

The use of electric leaf blowers remains permitted year-round between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
