Celebrating 52 years of community development in Oak Park
Published on March 26, 2026
The Village of Oak Park is joining communities across the country in recognizing the impact of the Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) as part of National Community Development Week from April 6-10.
Established through the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, CDBG provides flexible federal funding that allows local governments to address local priorities such as housing, neighborhood revitalization, infrastructure improvements and essential services for residents.
The Village has proudly been a recipient of CDBG funding since 1974, using these resources to invest in programs and projects that strengthen the community. In Program Year 2025 (Oct.1, 2025 – Sept. 30, 2026), Oak Park received approximately $1.5 million in federal funding, which the Village administers locally to address priority community needs.
These funds support a wide range of initiatives that benefit Oak Park residents. This includes public service programs delivered by local nonprofit partners, housing programs administered through the Village’s Housing Division, and infrastructure improvements projects that enhance neighborhood safety and accessibility.
In 2025, the Village awarded funding to seven nonprofit organizations, whose work provides critical services and support for residents across the community.
In recognition of the program’s importance, the Village Board issued a proclamation supporting the CDBG program and recognizing National Community Development Week.
While many programs directly support low- and moderate-income households, the improvements and services made possible through these federal dollars help strengthen neighborhoods and improve quality of life for all Oak Park residents.
As Oak Park celebrates more than five decades of participation in CDBG, the Village remains committed to leveraging these resources and community partnerships to continue building a stronger, more vibrant community.
