Shape Oak Park

Shape Oak Park is an initiative to update the Village’s zoning code to allow more missing middle housing and single family homes for everyone who wants to call Oak Park home. Draft Zoning recommendations need your feedback before the Plan Commission and Village Board vote this fall.

  1. Watch & Read - Visit Shape Oak Park to watch informational videos, review the analysis and read the full recommendations.
  2. Test Drive the Tool - Use the Zoning Comparison Tool to see exactly what could change at your address or in your neighborhood.
  3. Bring Your Questions - Ask the team questions and weigh in at community sessions like this one, or be sure to comment online.

What's Being Proposed:

  • Allow duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes in house-scale buildings across all neighborhoods. Single-family homes remain the heart of residential districts. New housing must fit the same lot size and form allowed today.
  • Allow six units only as a Special Use on lots 5,000 square feet or greater within 1⁄4 mile of a major transit stop or providing affordable units.
  • Update commercial districts to support more housing, with height limits tailored to each corridor and the height of nearby homes.
  • Align with the state’s People Over Parking Act, which limits amount of onsite parking required on lots near transit.

Plus recommendations to advance equity, affordability, sustainability, and historic preservation. Read it all at EngageOakPark.com/Shape.
