CPR/AED and First Aid Class Schedules

The Oak Park Fire Department offers a variety of life-saving classes including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and training in how to use an automated external defibrillator, or AED. A basic First Aid and Adult CPR combined course is also offered. 

Classes are held at the Department's certified American Heart Association community training center in the main fire station, 100 N. Euclid Ave. All courses are taught by an AHA-certified instructor.

Fees vary based on the class offered and residency. Payment must be made by check or cash in exact amount at the time of registration.

Heartsaver CPR/AED Adult, Child and Infant

The American Heart Association (AHA) Heartsaver CPR/AED Adult, Child, and Infant class is a course designed for individuals with limited or no prior medical training who require an official certification card.

This instructor-led, video-based course teaches the essential, life-saving skills of:

  • CPR for adults, children, and infants.
  • How to correctly use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Techniques to help a person who is choking (adult, child, and infant).

It employs a hands-on training approach, and successful completion earns an AHA Course Completion Card, valid for two years.

Heartsaver First Aid

AHA Heartsaver® First Aid is the official brand of training specifically designed for "lay rescuers"—individuals like teachers, coaches, or office workers who aren't in healthcare.

The curriculum uses a "watch-then-practice" video format to teach critical skills for managing medical, injury, and environmental emergencies before professionals arrive. This includes treating seizures, broken bones, and severe allergic reactions. It is the gold standard for workplace OSHA compliance. . Unlike healthcare-level courses, Heartsaver focuses on simplified, high-impact actions that anyone can perform to save a life.

Upon completion, students receive a certification card valid for two years.

BLS Healthcare Provider CPR/AED

The American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider course is the required standard for healthcare professionals and trained first responders (like nurses, EMTs, and doctors).

It focuses on recognizing life-threatening emergencies and delivering high-quality, professional-level care, including:

  • High-Quality CPR for adults, children, and infants.
  • Early use of an AED.
  • Effective ventilations using a barrier device.
  • Team Dynamics for multi-rescuer resuscitation.

The course requires the successful completion of both a written exam and practical skills tests, resulting in an AHA BLS Provider course completion card that is valid for two years.

Registration Fees: $70 resident, $90 nonresident

Heartsaver First Aid, CPR and AED

The AHA Heartsaver First Aid, CPR, and AED course provides non-healthcare professionals with essential lifesaving skills. Through hands-on training, participants learn to manage medical emergencies (strokes, choking), injuries (bleeding, broken bones), and environmental crises (allergic reactions, heat stroke).

The curriculum focuses on high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants, as well as the proper use of an AED. Designed for teachers, coaches, and safety officers, this OSHA-compliant course emphasizes quick action and personal safety.

Upon completion, students receive a certification card valid for two years, ensuring they are prepared to act in any emergency.
