Traffic calming treatments enhance Neighborhood Greenway Networks
Published on August 01, 2026
Throughout the summer, the Village is continuing to install traffic calming treatments on Oak Park streets in accordance with the community’s Vision Zero Action Plan and Bike Plan Update. This includes the installation of dozens of speed cushions and traffic diverters at strategic locations throughout Oak Park.
Enhancing Neighborhood Greenways
Many of the traffic calming treatments are being put in place along the Village’s Neighborhood Greenway Network.
A centerpiece of the Oak Park Bike Plan, Neighborhood Greenways are a network of residential streets designed to prioritize non-vehicular travel and improve safety for cyclists of all ages and abilities.
The greenways and their associated green and white pavement markings are intended to calm vehicle traffic, enhance street crossings and provide seamless connections to key destinations like schools, transit hubs and local businesses.
Traffic diverters
Traffic diverters are physical barriers that restrict the allowed movement of vehicles at intersections. Most commonly these come in the form of triangular shapes that only allow right turns.
The Bike Plan Update adopted in 2025 calls for these diverters at intersections between the Neighborhood Greenway Network and major streets. The intention of these diverters is to diminish through traffic and lower traffic volume on the greenways.
These diverters are being installed using temporary measures, and the impacts to local traffic will be studied throughout 2026.
Speed cushions
The Vision Zero Action Plan calls for the use of vertical deflection such as speed cushions in locations with vulnerable road users, specifically near parks and schools and along the Neighborhood Greenway Network. Speed cushions are designed to accommodate the passage of emergency vehicles.
Provide feedback
The Village is seeking feedback from the community about these traffic calming treatments. Residents are encouraged to visit www.engageoakpark.com/traffic-calming or scan the QR code at signs being placed around Oak Park near traffic calming treatments.
The webpage includes a map where community members can leave comments related to a specific location. Residents can also submit questions and find maps of speed cushion and traffic diverter locations.
