Forum to address West Nile Virus response

April 13, 2015 – With the threat of the mosquito-borne West Nile Virus sure to return as temperatures rise, the Oak Park Board of Health has scheduled a public forum to discuss what can be done to combat this sometimes deadly illness.

Residents are invited to attend the forum set for 7 p.m., Tues., April 28, in the Council Chamber at Village Hall, 123 Madison St.

In addition to Board of Health members and Village public health staff, a representative of the Desplaines Valley Mosquito Abatement District is expected to attend. The abatement district is responsible for mosquito control within a 77-square-mile area that includes Oak Park.

Speakers will discuss steps taken each season to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus, including when spraying for adult mosquitos is recommended. Public comment from the audience also will be taken.

The severity of the upcoming season has not been established, but the virus is found every year in samples gathered throughout the region, including in Oak Park. The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 42 human cases and four deaths last year.
