B-Box Water Flow Control Valve

The b-box, also known as Buffalo Box because it originated in Buffalo, New York, is used by the the Water & Sewer Division to shut off water to structures that that are having repairs made to the internal plumbling system and can not have water running in the line. The box also used to turn off the water for nonpayment. Village crews use a special key to turn the water on and off.

The b-box usually is located in the parkway, which can make it a hazard for lawn mowers if it protruces too far upward as a result of the natural movement of the ground caused by seasonal temperature fluctuations. The Public Works Department may raise or lower the b-box if necessary.
