Arrests made in November robbery of teenager

Feb. 4, 2016 – Oak Park Police have arrested two juveniles from Chicago in connection with the robbery of a teenage resident in November in the 300 block of South Ridgeland Avenue.

One suspect, a 15-year-old, was arrested in December and the other, also 15, was arrested yesterday. Police did not announce the first arrest so as not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation.

The incident generated considerable public attention after initial reports were of a group of teenagers assaulting the 14-year-old girl at about 7:30 p.m. near Ridgeland Avenue and Randolph Street.

The investigation established that while a group was present, only two individuals were involved in the robbery of the victim’s iPhone.

Within minutes of the crime being reported, Police stopped six teenagers in two separate groups who fit the general description provided by the victim. The victim was unable to identify any of the teenagers stopped as her assailants, but said she believed at least some of the individuals were present when she was robbed.

Police continued to interview the teenagers – all Chicago residents – over the next several months until they were able to gather sufficient information to implicate the suspects.

“Crimes of this kind strike a chord with the community and everyone understandably wants a quick resolution,” said Oak Park Police Chief Rick C. Tanksley. “Sometimes that is not always possible, especially when juveniles are involved. The message we hope these arrests send to the community and to criminals is that we don’t give up – ever.”

Investigators credited the parents of the juveniles who witnessed the crime for convincing them to cooperate.

“Investigating crimes where victims, witnesses and suspects are all juveniles requires patience and persistence,” Tanksley said. “Teens never want to be put in a position of telling anyone in authority anything that may get a peer into trouble. But thanks to supportive, caring parents and solid, proven investigative techniques we were able to close the book on this senseless crime.”

Oak Park Police worked with Chicago Police to arrest the two juveniles without incident. Both suspects were charged with robbery by the Juvenile Justice Bureau of the Cook County State’s Attorney. Their cases will be heard in juvenile court.
