June 7, 2020 - Undeterred by the cancellation of A Day in Our Village due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers have planned a virtual celebration for June 28 to keep alive the spirit of diversity and community involvement that has made the festival Oak Park’s unofficial kickoff to summer.
The event was originally scheduled for June 7, but had to be canceled because of restrictions prohibiting large gatherings. The virtual celebration will instead bring together messages from regular participants and festival goers in a hashtag-linked social media campaign organizers hope will tap into the energy of the Village’s longest running special event.
“This year’s virtual event will certainly be unlike any other A Day in Our Village celebration,” said Community Relations Director Cedric Melton, whose department rallies volunteers, schedules entertainers and recruits local restaurants for what has become the community’s premier summer special event. “But we are confident that not even a global pandemic can dampen the sense of community and the good vibes generated every year at A Day in Our Village.”
The goal, according to Melton, is to capture the spirit of A Day in Our Village, which has for decades offered current and prospective residents an opportunity to discover the diversity and variety of cultural, social service, business, educational and religious organizational groups in our community.
All of the organizations and businesses that signed up for this year’s physical event are invited to participate virtually by posting information about their connection to the community and the services they provide on social media using the hashtag #VirtualDayInOurVillage.
By using the #VirtualDayInOurVillage hashtag, participants not only will be sharing their messages with their own social media followers, but the message also will appear alongside every other post that includes #VirtualDayInOurVillage on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and other platforms.
Residents are also invited to share their community pride on June 28 through chalk drawings, photos, favorite memories and other messages that illustrate what they love most about Oak Park.
To join the celebration, all you need to do is post using #VirtualDayInOurVillage on any social media platform that uses hashtags. Just be sure to leave no spaces between the words #VirtualDayInOurVillage to make sure your messages are aggregated with other tagged messages.
The Village plans to promote the virtual festival through its communications channels in the days and weeks leading up to the event. And on June 28, the Village will post throughout the day, featuring historic photos, highlights from previous A Day in Our Village festivals and information about municipal government programs and services.
The ultimate goal, officials say, is that anyone who clicks on the #VirtualDayInOurVillage hashtag will be treated to a robust collection of messages that capture what makes Oak Park special.
First held in 1973, A Day in Our Village typically draws thousands of people to Scoville Park on the first Sunday in June. But like so many elements of community life turned upside down by COVID-19, this year’s event will play out on mobile devices and computer screens instead of featuring booths, entertainment and food in Scoville Park.
“We certainly will miss the opportunity to see everyone in person at A Day in Our Village, but look forward to keeping the spirit alive virtually,” Melton said. “Many thanks go out to our dedicated A Day in Our Village Festival Committee volunteers for helping shape this virtual plan and making it a reality.”
A Day in Our Village has been canceled only one other time. That was in 1975, when the still fledgling event faced a shortage of volunteers who handle the multitude of on-site tasks that make the gathering possible.
