Weekend activities abound

Dec. 3, 2015 - Residents and visitors will find a range of activities this weekend across the Village. Parking is free all day Saturday in the Holley Court Garage downtown and the Avenue Garage just east of Oak Park Avenue on North Boulevard. Free, two-hour parking also is available at bagged meters and pay by space lots downtown and in the vicinity of South Oak Park Avenue. Parking always is free on Sundays. Here are just a few of the of the weekend's activities.

  • Wright home and studio tours - Free tours of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, 951 Chicago Ave., will be offered on Sat., Dec. 5. The first tour will begin at 10 a.m., with the final tour leaving at 4 p.m. The Home will be decked for the holidays with poinsettias, fresh flowers, evergreens and wreaths in keeping with the Wright family tradition. The event also will feature a 15-percent discount on purchases from the Home and Studio Museum shop and free gift wrapping. Visit flwright.org/programs/homefortheholidays for more information.
     
  • A Christmas Story free at the Lake Theater - The holiday classic film A Christmas Story will be screened at 10 a.m., Sat. Dec. 5, at the Lake Theater, 1022 Lake St. Free tickets are available at Community Bank of Oak Park River Forest located just across the street from the theater.
     
  • Downtown cookie walk - Downtown Oak Park will host its annual cookie walk from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sat. Dec. 5. A $20 participation fee includes a souvenir cookie tin and a map of more than 45 shops and restaurants where participants go to collect a cookie or candy at each stop. Saint Nicholas (aka Santa Claus) will be on Marion Street along with a variety of family friendly acts. A hospitality tent near Lake Street will provide warmth as well as free hot chocolate and coffee. More details are included in this VOP-TV video.
     
  • Conservatory open house - The Oak Park Conservatory, 615 Garfield St., will host a holiday open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sat., Dec. 5. Poinsettias and paperwhites will be on display and for sale among other holiday plants. Staff horticulturists will be on hand to help make fresh arrangements. Children's holiday crafts and refreshments are planned. Admission is free. Information on the Conservatory is posted online.
  • Free fun at the Nature Center - Learn about the diversity of critters that make Chicago wild at 1 p.m. Sun., at the Trailside Museum of Natural History, 728 Thatcher Ave., in River Forest. Gavin Van Horn, co-editor of City Creatures: Animal Encounters in the Chicago Wilderness, will discuss his newly released book that tells about the area’s diversity of creatures through stories, art and photography. The event is free, but books will be available for purchase and signing. Call 708.366.6530 for more information.
