Residents urged to help dig out fire hydrants

Jan. 5, 2014 - With heavy, drifting snow here and record low temperatures on the way, Village officials are urging residents to help ensure firefighters have access to hydrants in an emergency.

Minutes saved locating and digging out a fire hydrant can be crucial in an emergency situation, officials say. A snow-packed hydrant also is more susceptible to freezing, which could hinder firefighting efforts.

By taking a few extra minute to 'adopt' your nearest fire hydrant by clearing the snow around it, a firefighter's ability to quickly locate and access the hydrant in an emergency can be enhanced significantly.

An accessible and properly functioning fire hydrant is a vital part of any firefighting operation.
