Police vigilant during July 4 traffic campaign

July 6, 2015 – Oak Park Police were out in force over the July 4 holiday cracking down on impaired and unbuckled drivers as part of a statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket enforcement effort.

The campaign resulted in 54 motorists stopped over the 10-day period from June 26 to July 5. Among the preliminary statistics were the following citations:

  • 28 citations issued for failure to wear a seatbelt
  • 8 citations for distracted driving (cellphones)
  • 1 motorist arrested for DUI
  • 3 motorists arrested for invalid / suspended driver licenses
  • 9 citations issued for miscellaneous traffic violations

"Extra emphasis was given to the late-night hours, when statistics show the highest number of motorists drink and drive and the fewest buckle up," said Deputy Police Chief Anthony Ambrose.

The law enforcement crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety.
