One shot as likely Chicago gang dispute spills into Oak Park

Nov. 5, 2015 – Oak Park Police are investigating a suspected gang-related shooting last night that began with a confrontation in Chicago, but ended on the Village’s southeast side and left one man hospitalized in critical condition.

The incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. in the 700 block of South Humphrey Avenue. However, investigators quickly established that the confrontation that led to the shooting began at Ashland Avenue near I-290 where occupants of the two vehicles reportedly were flashing gang signs.

Police who arrived on south Humphrey in response to a 911 call were met by residents who described what they believed to be gunshots and reporting having seen two vehicles leaving the scene.

West Suburban Medical Center alerted Police to a gunshot victim in the emergency room within minutes of the Oak Park shooting incident. Information gathered from the victim’s companions at the hospital tied his wounds to the incident on south Humphrey and established the series of events that lead to the shooting.

The victim, a resident of the 2200 block of N. Laramie Ave., was later transferred to Cook County's Stroger Hospital, where he was last reported in critical condition suffering from gunshots to his head.

Police said companions of the victim – two men and a woman – told them they encountered the vehicle whose passenger was believed to be the shooter on Ashland Avenue, near the westbound entry ramp to I-290.

The companions said both vehicles proceeded westbound on the expressway, the victim’s vehicle in the lead. The two vehicles exited northbound on Austin Boulevard, stopping briefly at the gas stations on opposite corners, before going north on Austin, the victim’s vehicle now following.

The vehicles turned west on Jackson Boulevard, then south on Humphrey where the confrontation escalated to gunfire, according to the victim’s companions.

Responding officers quickly closed down Humphrey Avenue between Jackson Boulevard and Van Buren Street in search of evidence. Officers also went door to door to make sure residents were safe and uninjured.

The investigation is continuing.
