North Kenilworth carjacking attempt fails

Jan. 18, 2018 – Oak Park Police are investigating the report of an attempted carjacking at about 6:30 p.m., Wed., Jan. 17, in the 1100 block of North Kenilworth Avenue.

The victim told Police she was waiting in her running vehicle when a small dark vehicle pulled past her car, stopped and a man exited the passenger side and approached her vehicle.

The suspect, who was wearing a mask, displayed a handgun and told the victim to get out of her vehicle. She complied and as the suspect entered her car, she ran toward the rear of her home where a relative was waiting in another vehicle.

The victim and her relative drove away and called Police.

Once the victim was located and returned to the scene, Police found her car still parked at the same location. Investigators believe the suspect may have accidentally turned off the keyless ignition system. Since the victim still had the ignition fob in her possession, the suspect was unable to restart the vehicle.

The suspect was described as a male of unknown race, about 5-feet, 9-inches tall, medium build, wearing dark clothing and a mask. No other information could be provided about the suspect, his accomplice or the car in which they likely fled.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Oak Park Police Department at 708.386.3800. Information may be provided anonymously by calling 708.434.1636 or online at www.oak-park.us/crimetip.
