Pie Bake-Off returns to Farmers' Market

Sept. 4, 2019 - Come for the fresh produce and stay for the pie this week at the Oak Park Farmers' Market.

The Market's third annual Pie Bake-Off will take place from about 10 to 11 a.m. this Saturday in the Pilgrim Church parking lot at 460 Lake St.

Thirteen entrants will participate in the event, which was open to amateur and professional bakers alike. A panel of four judges will choose a first, second and third-place winner based on the criteria of taste, creative use of Farmers' Market ingredients and appearance.

Winners will be announced shortly after the judging concludes, and slices of pie will be given away to Market visitors after the contest on a first-come, first-served basis.

This year's judges are Molly Svec, co-owner of Spilt Milk in Oak Park, Michelle Mascaro, owner of The Happy Apple Pie Shop in Oak Park, 2018 Pie-Bake off winner Alexandra Rey-Talley and junior judge Victor Lencioni.

All entries must be baked in a recyclable pan. Pies must be baked from scratch, include crust and filling, and feature Oak Park Farmers' Market ingredients.

Participants will submit copies of their recipies, but judges won't know whose entry they taste. Judging will be conducted using a numerical point system based on three criteria, with double points applied based on taste.

First, second and third-place winners will receive a ribbon and a merchandise gift from the Farmers' Market information booth.

Complete contest rules are posted on the Village website.

Now in its 44th season, the Oak Park Farmers' Market is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through October at 460 Lake St. Most vendors accept credit, debit and LINK cards, as well as WIC and senior coupons.
