Residential fire leaves home uninhabitable

July 29, 2019 – The Oak Park Fire Department responded Sunday night to a structure fire on the 400 block of Lenox Avenue that rendered a home uninhabitable.

Upon arriving on the scene at about 9:40 p.m. officials observed fire coming from a second-floor rear window. The residents self-evacuated, and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it spread much beyond the room of origin.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the residents, who were greatly relieved when a small dog that was missing in the aftermath of the fire was found hiding in nearby bushes by an Oak Park Police officer.

Crews were still on the scene after the fire had been extinguished when dispatchers fielded an unrelated report of smoke coming from the roof of Mann Elementary School. Oak Park firefighters responded along with a unit from North Riverside already in Oak Park to provide mutual aid. Officials determined the smoke was caused by fireworks.
