April 20, 2023 - On Saturday, April 8, just after 4 p.m., the Oak Park Police Department was called to the Oak Park-River Forest High School fieldhouse in response to an aggravated battery that occurred during a wrestling event, the Beat the Streets Chicago Freestyle & Greco Tournament hosted by USA Wrestling. Neither party involved is an Oak Park resident or an OPRF High School student.

Upon arriving on scene, officers met with the complainants (parents of the victim) and they relayed that their son, 14 years old, was struck in the face, unprovoked, at the conclusion of a wrestling match. The victim, who had no prior relationship with the offender, sustained a bloody nose, but declined additional medical response. Officers were also shown a video of the match by the family, confirming the events as stated.

Oak Park police officers also spoke with the offender, 14 years old, and his parents. The offender stated that he struck his opponent because he was angry that he had lost the match. The offender and family also relayed that they would cooperate with any future investigation into the matter.

After reflection, and approximately three days after the incident, the family of the victim followed up with the Oak Park Police Department and indicated a desire to pursue criminal charges.

The investigation is ongoing and updates on the matter will be provided when available.
