Oak Park Police investigating possible hate crime

Jan. 6, 2021 – Oak Park Police are investigating an incident of attempted vandalism to a local business that may be considered a hate crime.

Shortly before 8 a.m. today a passerby reported damage to the window of the Live Café, 163 S. Oak Park Ave. Police found no damage to the window, but a brick was found near the door, wrapped in what appeared to be notebook paper with a racial slur scrawled on it.

The investigation is still underway, but Police say early indications are that it was an isolated incident and no other nearby businesses vandalized.

“Oak Park Police consider this to be a very serious incident, even though the property sustained little if any damage,” said Oak Park Police Chief LaDon Reynolds. “This type of cowardly act is not indicative of our community and we will investigate vigorously.”

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Oak Park Police Department at 708.386.3800. Information may also be provided anonymously by calling 708.434.1636 or online at www.oak-park.us/crimetip.
