New affordable housing development breaks ground on South Oak Park Avenue

Feb. 10, 2020 — Ground was officially broken today at 801 S. Oak Park Ave. for a mixed‐use transit‐oriented development that will provide 37 high-quality affordable apartments and approximately 1,000 square feet of commercial space.

Funding for the estimated $15-million project, which is slated to open next year, included $500,000 from the Village of Oak Park Affordable Housing Fund.

”This project will provide new affordable housing in Oak Park” said Oak Park Mayor Anan Abu-Taleb. “The Village of Oak Park is proud to be a part of the effort to take the project from a concept to a reality. When the project is complete, I think the neighborhood will be proud, too.”

The new development will offer a mix of studios, one and two-bedroom units. Nine will be for individuals with disabilities.

In addition, the development will include two live‐work apartments on the ground floor that are intended to support entrepreneurs such as artists.

Officials say these ground floor tenants also will support existing businesses in the area and improve the pedestrian experience along this key community retail block.

Called The 801, the project is being developed by The Community Builders, Inc., a leading nonprofit housing organization that develops, finances and operates mixed-income housing developments across the country.
