Healthy living can lower the risk of diabetes

Nov. 6,  2020 – Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States, and throughout November the Village’s Public Health Department is promoting healthy living choices that can help stave off the disease as part of American Diabetes Month.

Additionally, the CDC includes diabetes as an underlying health condition that could put someone at an increased risk for severe illness from the virus that causes COVID-19.

One in 10 Americans have diabetes – that’s more than 30 million people. Another 84 million adults in the United States are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a chronic condition that affects the way bodies metabolize sugar.

Depending on age, weight and other factors, some individuals are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is that making healthy choices can greatly lower the risk of contracting the disease.
