Fair housing task force seeks local volunteers

March 20, 2014 - In the wake of a critical report about fair housing practices in Oak Park, Village officials are seeking applications from community members to join the newly formed Fair Housing Task Force.

The organization, made up of elected officials, municipal staff and members of the community, will dig deep into the results of a recent report by HOPE Fair Housing Center. HOPE was hired by the Village to determine if barriers exist in the local rental housing market due to an individual’s race, family status, age or disability.

Despite the Village’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, the report, released in February, showed that a “startling” level of discrimination by landlords and real estate agents still exists.

Six community members will be selected by the Village Board to join the task force. Applicants are encouraged to apply online at www.oak-park.us/volunteer using the commission application form. The deadline to apply is March 31.

The task force will focus on improvement in three key areas:

  • Enforcement of existing laws and ordinances
  • Community education
  • Oversight for housing-related agencies in Oak Park

Since the report was released earlier this year, the Village Board has moved quickly to craft a strategy to address the issues raised in the study. Board members have expressed their commitment to strengthening Oak Park’s diversity and ensuring that everyone has fair and equal access to housing opportunities in the community.

Passed in 1968, Oak Park’s fair housing ordinance was among the first of its kind in the nation. Chapter 13 of the Village Code protects the rights of individuals within the protected classes of race, sex, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, veteran status, sexual orientation, age, marital status, familial status or disability in the purchasing, leasing, securing a loan, renting or occupying housing or other real estate.
