Environmental Services recycling lawn signs at Public Works

With the Consolidated Municipal Election now complete, Oak Park residents can recycle yard signs through a special drop-off coordinated by the Public Works Department's Environmental Services Division through April 21.

Most political lawn signs are made of corrugated plastic and displayed with an aluminum frame. Due to that construction, both items are not eligible under the residential recycling program in Oak Park. However, the Village's residential refuse hauler (LRS) has agreed to accept the corrugated plastic signs for recycling so long as they are separated from the aluminum display and from other plastics.

Beginning April 5, two (2) 96-gallon refuse containers will be set up in the first-floor lobby of the Public Works Center at 201 South Blvd. between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays through April 19 for yard sign drop off. One container will be specifically designated for lawn signs, and one will be specifically designated for the aluminum components. The sign container will be emptied into a gaylord provided by LRS and the aluminum container will be emptied into the scrap metal dumpster in the Village’s Fleet Division.

The corrugated plastic and aluminum frames used in yard signs are not eligible for recycling through the Village’s residential recycling program, so residents are asked to refrain from disposing of the signs in their recycling carts and instead use the drop-off system at Public Works.
