Enrollment period ongoing for local electricity aggregation program

April 11, 2023 – The enrollment period for the Village’s electricity aggregation program is underway following the extension of the Village’s contract with MC Squared Energy Services, LLC (mc2).

The new contract, which runs through 2025, ensures participants never pay more than the ComEd energy rate.

In addition, the contract will provide monthly revenue for the Community Choice Aggregation Fund, used to support priority renewable energy and energy efficiency projects identified within Climate Ready Oak Parkthe community sustainability, climate action and resiliency plan.

Electricity customers who receive a letter from the Village of Oak Park and its vendor MC Squared Energy Services, LLC (mc2), but already participate in the Village’s Community Choice Electricity Aggregation Program, will be enrolled automatically unless they choose to opt-out by following the instructions in the letter.

Any Oak Parkers enrolled in the Village program who now want to choose their own energy supplier – and electricity customers who use another electricity supplier but now want to join the Village program – can make the switch by contacting mc2  at 1.855.259.1179 or oakpark@mc2energyservices.com. No enrollment or switching fee will be assessed.

Aggregation does not alter the actual delivery of electricity, which is provided by ComEd. In fact, consumers have the option of choosing from retail electric suppliers approved by the Illinois Commerce Commission. More information on electricity aggregation, ComEd basic service rates and approved alternative suppliers are posted online at www.pluginillinois.org.

The contract with mc2 ties the Village aggregation rate to the ComEd basic service rate, which typically changes in May and October, but can vary by season. This mc2 contract provision ensures aggregation participants will never pay more than those customers whose electricity is supplied by ComEd.

Electricity aggregation, which was authorized by Illinois statute, allows municipalities to bundle residential and smaller business accounts, then use competitive bidding to seek lower rates from alternate suppliers. Voters gave the Village the authority to create a local aggregation program via referendum in 2011 and the first contract began Jan. 1, 2012.

Customers who choose to opt out of the Village aggregation program are enrolled automatically in an electricity generation program provided by ComEd unless they select a provider on the open market.

Officials urge those who elect to choose an electricity provider from the state's list to read the fine print carefully. Contracts may contain unexpected fees and penalties to cancel.

More information on opting out or in is available by calling mc1.855.259.1179 or email to oakpark@mc2energyservices.com.
