Commercial building collapses after being struck by vehicle

Nov. 12, 2021 – A 44-year-old Elmwood Park man was charged with driving under the influence after his vehicle crashed into a single-story commercial building on North Avenue at about 10:20 p.m., Thurs., Nov. 11.

An Oak Park Police officer patrolling near North Avenue heard the crash and was on the scene almost immediately. The officer found David Cross of the 2300 block of North 76th Court still inside the vehicle.

Cross, the vehicle’s only occupant, was transported to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood for evaluation and treatment, but was later released to Oak Park Police who issued the tickets.

In addition to the DUI charge, Cross also was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and not having proof of vehicle insurance.

The building at 6109 North Avenue, which housed Barnards Schwinn Cyclery, sustained substantial damage and likely will need to be demolished.
