Study adopted in February 2007
Study Addresses Potential of Chicago Avenue Business Corridor

As part of a community wide effort to create long-term redevelopment strategies for Oak Park's business districts, the Village conducted a study of Chicago Avenue between Ridgeland Avenue and Austin Boulevard. The study area also included the commercial properties just west of the Ridgeland-Chicago intersection. The objective of the study, which was adopted by the Village Board in February 2007, was to develop a plan that would improve the economic marketability of the Chicago/Austin business district, while enhancing the quality of life within the surrounding area. A professional consultant hired through a competitive process facilitated planning workshops, a public forum, stakeholder interviews and focus groups, and conducted and analyzed input from an area-wide survey. The study sought to determine what residents and business owners wanted the area to be, what they liked and didn't like about the environment now and what can be done to make the corridor more attractive and vibrant in the future. The study also assessed the livability, vibrancy and ambiance of the Chicago Avenue corridor as it relates to potential future development. The study of the Chicago Avenue Business Corridor is part of a long-term strategy to create redevelopment character plans for each of the Village's business districts. Studies already have been conducted for Roosevelt Road, the Harrison Street and Oak Park Avenue-Eisenhower business districts and the greater downtown area.
