Harrison Street corridor planning underway

Residents and business operators are working together to help create an urban design plan to promote art and cultural opportunities, create excitement and build momentum for improvements along Harrison Street, which is home to many of Oak Park's galleries and art-related businesses. The plan is being created by The Lakota Group, a Chicago-area professional planning and design firm hired to craft the Arts District Urban Design Plan for the Harrison Street corridor. The Lakota Group has worked with numerous communities, developers and landowners on residential, industrial, commercial, downtown, mixed-use and park/open space plans. Area issues, strengths and opportunities will be reviewed, and ideas for improving street lighting and gateway features discussed as part of the study process. Ways to connect and unify the business corridor, as well opportunities for local artists to create public art pieces and design enhancements, also will be addressed.

A special project web page has been created where all information presented and gathered at community sessions will be posted. A special e-mail address – harrisonstreetplan@oak-park.us – also has been created to allow individuals to comment or ask questions about the planning process.
