Veteran Village employee named interim Health Director

Oct. 12, 2015 – A veteran Village employee has been named Interim Director of the Oak Park Department of Public Health, Village Manager Cara Pavlicek announced today.

Mike Charley, who joined the Health Department in 2003 as manager of the Environmental Services Division, steps into a position that had been vacant since Margaret Provost-Fyfe retired at the end of 2014 after 30 years with the Village.

“I am pleased to appoint Mike to this important role at the helm of the Health Department,” Pavlicek said. “His formal training and on-the-job experience have prepared him to assume the duties of Public Health Director while we complete this year’s budget process and consider conducting a formal, competitive search for candidates qualified to fill the position permanently.”

In his role as the Health Department’s Environmental Services manager, Charley supervised a broad range of programs and processes including food services inspections, animal control and the Oak Park Farmers’ Market. In addition to his new duties as Interim Health Director, Charley will continue to manage the department’s environmental services functions, according to Pavlicek.

“Adding the duties of director to my current tasks is a challenge I look forward to taking on,” Charley said. “This is a great opportunity at this point in my career to learn more about managing the broader mission of a public health department."

Prior to coming to Oak Park, Charley, 44, had been an environmental consultant, a sanitarian with the DuPage County Health Department and a supervisor with the City of Evanston’s Health Department.

He has a bachelor’s degree in environmental health from Illinois State University and a master’s degree in environmental management from the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Stuart School of Business.

Charley also holds several professional certifications including being a Licensed Environmental Health Practitioner and Licensed Lead Assessor.

Deputy Village Manager Lisa Shelley had served as the Interim Public Health Director since Provost-Fyfe’s retirement.
