Suspect arrested, charged in May home invasion

Updated with bond information at 3:35 p.m., June 8, 2015

June 8, 2015 – A suspect wanted in connection with a May 21 home invasion in Oak Park was taken into custody Saturday evening.

Mark Barnes, 43, was arrested and the Cook County State Attorney’s Office approved charges of home invasion, aggravated criminal sexual assault and armed robbery. Bond was denied at a hearing today. An initial court date is set for June 12 in the 4th Municipal District Courthouse in Maywood.

Intensive investigative efforts by Oak Park Police led to Barnes in a motel in the 9300 block of south Cicero Avenue in Oak Lawn. With the assistance of the Oak Lawn Police, Barnes was taken into custody without incident.

Evidence collected at the crime scene by Oak Park Police Department evidence technicians was analyzed by Illinois State Police Crime Laboratory, which linked Barnes to the crime.

Barnes was previously convicted of criminal sexual assault with a firearm in 1997. He had just been released from Illinois Department of Corrections custody in April.

Police Chief Rick C. Tanksley not only credited the work of the entire Oak Park Police Department, but also that of the Chicago Transit Authority’s Office of Security and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force.

“Crimes of this type are rare in our community,” Tanksley said. “But when they do occur, there are many law enforcement resources the department can call upon to assist us”.
