Aug. 1, 2017 - Amateur and professional bakers alike can put their pie-making skills to the test by entering the Oak Park Farmers’ Market’s inaugural Pie Bake-Off.
The baking contest is open to anyone age 16 and over and will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Sept. 2 at the Oak Park Farmers’ Market. A minimum of three judges will be present during the contest to choose a first, second and third-place winner based on the criteria of taste, creative use of Farmers’ Market ingredients and appearance.
“The Farmers’ Market Commission is always looking for fun events to help attract people to the Market,” said Mike Charley, Health Director for the Village. “A pie-baking contest seemed like a great way to showcase the talents of some of our residents while adding a little extra flavor to a regular week at the Market.”
While there is no entry fee, pre-registration is required by Aug. 22. Contest entry forms may be submitted to the Farmers’ Market information booth or via email to email@example.com.
Due to judging time constraints, officials say the contest is limited to only 15 entries. Entries will be selected using a lottery system and selected participants will be notified via email.
All entries must be baked in a recyclable pan. Pies must be baked from scratch, include crust and filling, and feature Oak Park Farmers’ Market ingredients.
Participants will submit copies of their recipes, but judges won’t know whose entry they taste. Judging will be conducted using a numerical point system based on the three criteria, with double points applied based on taste.
Winners will be announced shortly after the judging concludes, and slices of pie will be given away to Market visitors after the contest on a first-come, first-served basis.
First, second and third-place winners will receive a ribbon and a merchandise gift from the Farmers’ Market information booth.
Complete contest rules and entry forms are posted on the Village website.
Now in its 42nd season, the Oak Park Farmers’ Market is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through October in the Pilgrim Church parking lot, 460 Lake St. Most vendors accept credit, debit and LINK cards, as well as WIC and senior coupons.
