Farmers' Market hosting Pie Bake-Off

Aug. 23, 2017 - Amateur and professional bakers alike will put their pie-making skills to the test at the Oak Park Farmers’ Market’s inaugural Pie Bake-Off.

Fifteen entrants have been selected to participate in the event, which will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Sept. 2 at the Oak Park Farmers’ Market. A panel of three judges will choose a first, second and third-place winner based on the criteria of taste, creative use of Farmers’ Market ingredients and appearance. Bios of the three judges are posted below.

“The Farmers’ Market Commission is always looking for fun events to help attract people to the Market,” said Mike Charley, Health Director for the Village. “A pie-baking contest seemed like a great way to showcase the talents of some of our residents while adding a little extra flavor to a regular week at the Market.”

The contest was open to anyone age 16 and over. Due to judging time constraints, officials limited the contest to 15 entries, with participants selected through a lottery following the Aug. 22 registration deadline.

All entries must be baked in a recyclable pan. Pies must be baked from scratch, include crust and filling, and feature Oak Park Farmers’ Market ingredients.

Participants will submit copies of their recipes, but judges won’t know whose entry they taste. Judging will be conducted using a numerical point system based on the three criteria, with double points applied based on taste.

Winners will be announced shortly after the judging concludes, and slices of pie will be given away to Market visitors after the contest on a first-come, first-served basis.

First, second and third-place winners will receive a ribbon and a merchandise gift from the Farmers’ Market information booth.

Complete contest rules are posted on the Village website.

Now in its 42nd season, the Oak Park Farmers’ Market is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through October in the Pilgrim Church parking lot, 460 Lake St. Most vendors accept credit, debit and LINK cards, as well as WIC and senior coupons.
