Oak Park's Government Access TV Channel

The goal of VOP-TV, the government access channel for the Village, is to provide the citizens of Oak Park with information about their government, community and quality of life. VOP-TV is found on channel six of the Comcast cable television line-up and channel 99 on AT&T. Village Board meetings, information about Oak Park governmental services and original public information programming are broadcast.

VOP-TV is a government access cable channel as provided for in the Cable Communications Policy Act of 1984. This federal legislation established the framework for the provision of government channels, educational channels and public channels (PEG) for use by each of the corresponding broad groups. Because VOP-TV is a government channel, there is no legal requirement to broadcast any type of programming that is not government-sponsored. VOP-TV is committed to programming that helps residents learn more about Village programs, services, their neighbors and important issues facing the area. VOP-TV has four main objectives:

  1. To serve as an on-going source of government information for the citizens of Oak Park.
  2. To increase public knowledge of the functions and responsibilities of Village government, and of the functions of the various departments, commissions, committees and boards.
  3. To serve as an information center in the event of a local emergency, such as weather, fire or crime.
  4. To supplement the ongoing communications between the Village of Oak Park and its residents.

VOP-TV provides information to the citizens of Oak Park concerning the functions, activities, programs and issues of Village government. The channel is not intended for use as a political forum by an individual or group, or as a mechanism for building exclusive support for a particular person, program or issue. Under Oak Park's cable television franchise agreement, Channel 19, as a public access channel, is reserved entirely for use by the public as a forum for these purposes. Channel 16, the educational access channel, is reserved for use by schools. The cable franchise holder provides portable cameras, an editing suite and a public access studio. Cable subscription is not required to take advantage of this free service. Residents and employees of non-profit organizations based in Oak Park can become qualified users of public access simply by taking one of the regularly scheduled classes offered by the cable company. In addition, community events sponsored by local organizations can be listed on the bulletin board message system that scrolls on the public access channel whenever there is no programming.
