Forestry Division
Each year the Forestry Division works to reforest Village parkways where trees have been removed. Tree plantings typically occur every spring and fall. Whenever a parkway tree is removed, the Village attempts to replant new trees. While the Forestry Division makes every effort to replace all trees removed, this is not always possible. Full size shade trees require a minimum of 35 feet (about seven sidewalk squares) between trees. Factors such as underground and overhead utilities, parkway widths and shade tolerance also must be considered when determining planting sites. In order to diversify the tree population, a wide variety of species are planted to replace removed trees, including Autumn Blaze Maple, Catalpa, Kentucky Coffee Tree, Ivory Silk Lilac, Hackberry, Bur Oak, Swamp White Oak, Sugar Maple and two DED-resistant Elms -- Homestead and Frontier. If a new tree is planted in the parkway, residents can help nurture the young tree by providing slow deep watering once a week during hot, dry periods, protecting from mower and string trimmer damage, avoiding using weed killer near the tree, and not fertilizing for one year. |
