Forestry Division
Tree Care The Forestry division is responsible for the care and maintenance of parkway trees. One of the key tools of proper tree care is a regular trimming, typically every spring and fall. Proper pruning is critical to the long-term health of trees and resident safety. In addition to clearing out deadwood and weakened limbs that could fall in a high wind or under the weight of ice and snow, or summer thunderstorms, pruning also helps to minimize damage from large trucks and reduces the possibility of injuries from low limbs or reduced visibility caused by streetlights obscured by poorly maintained trees. Pruning also helps prepare trees to better withstand the onslaught of disease and insects. The Village's pruning approach is based upon sound arboricultural science that will help these freshly pruned trees produce some of the most elegant canopies in the Village when they leaf in the spring. In 2002, the Forestry Division established a cycle that has every tree on Village parkways trimmed once every four years. Due to budgetary constraints in 2010, this trim cycle, among the most aggressive in the region, was reduced. However, Village foresters have continued their efforts to keep Oak Park's urban forest well trimmed and thriving. |
